Leaving Atlanta? 7 Ways Chattanooga Can Impact Your Life

By Chris Roberts - July 20, 2025

Welcome to Chattanooga (Not Atlanta): Why More Georgians Are Heading North

If you’re reading this from somewhere in Georgia, there’s a good chance you’ve already thought about it.

Maybe it was in the middle of your hour-long commute across metro Atlanta. Or when your rent jumped—again. Or maybe, just maybe, you heard about someone who moved to Chattanooga and actually got more for less.

Whatever sparked the thought, you’re not alone. And for that next stop in your research journey, grab my free Chattanooga Relocation Guide!

Why Are So Many People Leaving Atlanta?

Let’s be real: Atlanta is an incredible city. Amazing food, rich history, vibrant culture. But living there? It’s gotten tough.

📈 The median home price in Atlanta is now around $465,000.
💸 A 2-bedroom apartment? Often pushing $2,000/month.
🛒 Add in groceries, gas, car insurance—it’s a lot.

Now compare that to Chattanooga, where the median home price is closer to $340,000 and average rent is about $400 less per month. According to BestPlaces.net, it’s 21% cheaper overall to live in Chattanooga than Atlanta.

And did I mention that Tennessee doesn’t have a state income tax?

Translation: More house. Less stress. Better quality of life.

The Traffic Trade-Off: 2 Hours a Day or 20 Minutes?

You know what else comes with Atlanta life? Traffic. Gridlock. Commutes that steal your time and your sanity.

I’ve had clients who spent over two hours a day in the car—just to get to work or shuttle kids to school. That’s 10 hours a week you’re never getting back.

Here in Chattanooga, most of what you need is within a 15- to 20-minute drive. I’ve had people message me saying they keep leaving the house too early because they forget they're not in Atlanta anymore. True story.

Even our infamous I-75/I-24 split is finally improving. And for what it’s worth, my wife made the move from Atlanta years ago — and swears it changed her life.

What Is Life Really Like in Chattanooga?

This isn’t just a cheaper city — it’s a different way of living.

🏞️ Want to paddleboard after work?
🌄 Hike Lookout Mountain before breakfast?
☕ Work remotely from a mountaintop Airbnb with great Wi-Fi?
🎶 Catch live music downtown on the weekends?
You can do all that here.

We call it the Scenic City for a reason. Chattanooga’s surrounded by lush mountains, rivers, and waterfalls—and yet it still has a walkable downtown, local markets, thriving coffee shops, and a real sense of community.

And yes, we get a decent amount of rain (Tennessee ranks #6 in the U.S.), but that’s what makes everything so green and gorgeous.

Who’s Moving Here?

In just the past couple of years, I’ve helped:

  • 👩‍💻 Remote workers who traded commutes for mountain views

  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Families priced out of Atlanta schools

  • 👵 Retirees who sold their big Georgia homes and bought something simpler — with cash left over

  • 🧑‍⚕️ Teachers, nurses, first responders — even tech workers — who live in Chattanooga and keep their jobs in Georgia

Some come to rent first and “test it out,” but it doesn’t take long. Soon, they’re texting me about buying. Once you feel the difference, you’ll get it.

Where Do They Move To?

Here are a few favorite neighborhoods for Georgia transplants:

  • Northshore – Trendy, walkable, and full of river views and boutiques

  • St. Elmo – Historic charm with trail access to Lookout Mountain

  • Ooltewah & Cleveland – Family-friendly, great schools, peaceful communities

  • East Brainerd, Hixson, and Red Bank – Offer everything from mid-century homes to new construction with space to roam

Whether you’re after character or convenience (or both), you’ll find it here.

Bonus: Your Move Helps Save a Life

When you buy or sell a home with me, a portion of my compensation goes to a pet-focused nonprofit through my initiative, Mission 42 — named after a stray dog who changed our lives.

So your move won’t just change your life… it could help change someone else’s, too.
